President Obama took the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument and quadrupled it in size creating the worlds largest ecologically protected area. This area was first created more than a decade ago in order to help protect the Hawaiian ocean.
This means that no commercial act ivies can take place in this zone. Including fishing, mining, and pretty much everything else that could damage the fragile ocean ecosystem.
In this area the worlds oldest living animal was recently found. It is a Black Coral and estimated to be around 4500 years old.
